The Varied Carpet Beetle is now considered the UK’s most common textile pest, overtaking clothes moths in recent years. These small, oval beetles measure around 2-4mm and are often mistaken for tiny, mottled ladybirds with their brown, grey, and cream patterns. Other species, like the black Fur Beetle with a single spot on each wing and the rarer Black Carpet Beetle, can also be encountered in homes and businesses.

The larvae, known as "woolly bears," cause the real damage. These hairy, brown larvae grow up to 4mm in length. As they develop, they shed their skins, which are typically one of the first signs of an infestation. Adults are commonly seen in spring and early summer, while larvae are most active in autumn before hibernating. The damage caused by carpet beetles often gets misidentified as a common clothes moth, and without the right experience can be extremely difficult to assess the extent of the type of infestation present.

Adult Carpet Beetles feed on pollen but lay their eggs in bird nests, old fabrics, and debris inside buildings. Once hatched, the larvae feed on natural fibres like wool, fur, feathers, and hair. They can easily spread through pipework and often settle in warm, quiet areas such as airing cupboards, where they can cause serious damage to clothes, carpets, and soft furnishings.
